Transamerica

In the relatively short history of cross-dressers and transsexuals on film, from “The Crying Game” to “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” none has come as close to an under-the-skin portrait as “Transamerica.” Yes, there was the searing “Boys Don’t Cry,” but that was a tragedy. “Transamerica” is a feel-good movie that still manages to create a refreshingly original transsexual character who is complex enough to carry the film and honest enough to inspire identification.

Writer/director Duncan Tucker has created a plum role for Felicity Huffman and she is flat-out terrific; in fact, I’d lay odds on an Oscar nomination right now.
