Male lust

Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

What makes a man a man? How much of our sex differences are cultural, how much hard-wired biology? Who better to ask than Max Wolf Valerio – a 49-year-old man who was once a woman? (-)
Masculinity, Valerio says, is hormonal and injectable. Testosterone alone was enough to take him most of the way through his one-way journey to manhood.(-)
Now, as Max, he says, no one ever thinks he’s anything but a guy. When he goes to transsexual meetings, people either don’t know why he’s there or assume he’s trying to become a woman.(-)

Living as a man, he eventually had his breasts removed. Seventeen years later, at 49, he still has had no surgery on his genitals. The hormones enlarged Valerio’s clitoris so much that it grew to the size of his thumb when erect. He says it looks much like a penis now and he uses it to have intercourse with his girlfriend.
When Valerio was still Anita, she and her lesbian friends thought men’s leering, lustful behavior was nothing but posturing. Now, he’s felt male lust for himself.

Police the gender

Tuesday, April 11th, 2006

Perhaps the worst of Fox’s offenders is “Geraldo at Large.” I accidentally had it on the accursed channel a couple of weeks ago while I was getting ready to go out, when Geraldo and his gigantic moustache caught my attention.(-)

The story was one about a kidnapping perpetrated by a male-to-female transgender babysitter who supposedly “duped” the family she worked for by “disguising” herself as a woman. What she did was wrong, but that wasn’t what mattered to Geraldo.

Instead, the story focused on the babysitter’s “dishonesty” about her gender (despite the fact that she had her birth certificate legally changed to “female,” that she lived full-time as a woman and that she had even had breast implants). Overall, the story had absolutely nothing to do with the crime committed, but rather simply was a thinly veiled attempt to police the gender of the offender.

It’s time for a boycott (or rather, girlcott), but first I just need to wean myself off “The Simpsons.”

Maleness

Saturday, December 10th, 2005

Tall, thin and strikingly beautiful, model Christie North always felt female. But when she was 15, she discovered she’d been born with male chromosomes. “There was no mention at school that there can be mix ups with your chromosomes”, she complains. “Many people have the same problem – more than you think.” As well as girls with XY chromosomes, one in 500 boys are born with a double XX as well as a Y. Most only find out about their condition when they try to father children and discover they’re infertile.

Until the 1990s, gender was largely about chromosomes. But this principle was challenged when a new gene was discovered which is needed to start the process of ‘maleness’. “I think we’re starting to understand how the brain is hard-wired differently between males and females”, explains Prof. Vince Harley. Scientists are now looking at a further 54 genes which are turned on differently in males and females. They may help to explain why people identify as one gender or the other, regardless of chromosomes.

Transamerica

Friday, December 2nd, 2005

In the relatively short history of cross-dressers and transsexuals on film, from “The Crying Game” to “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” none has come as close to an under-the-skin portrait as “Transamerica.” Yes, there was the searing “Boys Don’t Cry,” but that was a tragedy. “Transamerica” is a feel-good movie that still manages to create a refreshingly original transsexual character who is complex enough to carry the film and honest enough to inspire identification.

Writer/director Duncan Tucker has created a plum role for Felicity Huffman and she is flat-out terrific; in fact, I’d lay odds on an Oscar nomination right now. Within minutes, Huffman makes the merely curious and the skeptical forget all about Transamerica&quotDesperate Housewives.Transamerica” As male-to-female transsexual Bree Osbourne, Huffman de-glams herself and all but disappears into the role.

News – Body checks

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005

TRANSSEXUALS should carry with them medical certificates of sex-change operations to prove their status, said Deputy Home Affairs Minister Datuk Tan Chai Ho.

If the medical certificates stated their sex-change status, only female enforcement officers could carry out body checks on them, reported Sin Chew Daily.

He was commenting on the incident in which a transsexual claimed that three policemen ordered her to strip naked to see if she was physically a man or a woman.

“By showing the medical certificate, it will prevent any untoward incident like this and ease the job of enforcement officers when it comes to conducting body checks,” said Tan.

News – Something was wrong

Thursday, November 17th, 2005

SAITAMA, Japan — On stage, Kei Rodriguez looks and moves like a supermodel.

So it comes as no surprise that at least 10 ¥1,000 notes clipped between chopsticks are waved in her direction by appreciative guests of the Tres Bien Stage Club in this prefecture next to Tokyo.

The mostly middle-aged men and women who frequent the small club in the basement of a three-story building near the train station just love the way Kei moves.

And they don’t seem to care that up until five years ago, she was a man.

Kei is one of an estimated 100 transsexual Filipinos who have found acceptance and a decent living as entertainers in Japan.

Speaking with the Inquirer in a series of interviews, she said she was not as sure of feeling the same warmth among fellow Filipinos, many of whom look askance at people like her who believe that God made a mistake when she was born with a penis.

“Whenever I looked in the mirror, I felt that there was something wrong,” she recalled.

News – Illegal marriage

Wednesday, November 16th, 2005

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) – The Malaysian government said Monday it would not recognise a marriage between a man and his transsexual spouse – believed to be the first such union in this mostly Muslim country.

Jessie Chung, a Malaysian Christian businesswoman in her 30s who underwent a sex change operation two years ago, married Joshua Beh at a hotel in Malaysia’s eastern Sarawak state on Borneo island late Saturday, said wedding coordinator Brian Choot.

Chung and Beh, an accountant, have not obtained a legal marriage certificate. Their wedding was conducted by pastors from three independent churches, Choot told The Associated Press.

However, Deputy Home Affairs Minister Tan Chai Ho said Malaysian authorities considered the union a same-sex marriage, which is illegal in Malaysia
